Background
Since its inception in 2022, the International Intelligent Competition for Intelligent Simulation of Transport Infrastructure (ICISTI), spearheaded by Harbin Institute of Technology, Chang'an University, and The Hong Kong Polytechnic University, has received strong support from international academic organizations such as the Academy of Pavement Science and Engineering (APSE), ASCE Greater China Section, International Association of Chinese Infrastructure Professionals (IACIP) and the European Transportation Research Center, as well as from the Chinese Association for Simulation, the China Journal of Highway and Transport, and other universities and institutes both domestic and abroad.
The finals of the 1st ICISTI event were successfully held in March 2023, attracting over 100 teams from nearly 20 countries. Ultimately, 36 teams advanced to the finals and received awards.
The finals of the 2nd ICISTI event were successfully held in January 2024 at City University of Hong Kong. More than 20 judges from top universities in Germany, the Netherlands, the United Kingdom, the United States, and China were invited to evaluate the entries based on their innovation, scientific significance, and presentations. A total of 48 teams were selected as award winners.
The Final of the 3rd ICISTI event was successfully held at Harbin Institute of Technology in December 2024. Over 40 judges from top universities in Germany, the Netherlands, the United Kingdom, the United States, Japan, Singapore, Hong Kong (China), and mainland China were specially invited to comprehensively evaluate the 105 finalist teams and their projects in terms of innovation, background significance, scientific methodology, and on-site defense.
To further explore and share the latest research findings in the fundamental theories and engineering technologies of numerical simulation for transportation infrastructure, the 4th ICISTI event hosted by National University of Singapore and co-organized by Harbin Institute of Technology, The Hong Kong Polytechnic University, City University of Hong Kong, and Chang'an University will officially launch in June 2025. The detailed participation information is as follows:
Competition Tracks
The competition focuses on the intelligent operation and maintenance of future transportation infrastructure and enhancing its resilience. It is divided into 5 tracks:
T1: Road and Airport Engineering
T2: Bridge and Tunnel Engineering
T3: Transportation Geotechnical Engineering
T4: Pavement Materials
T5: Intelligent Transportation Engineering
Participation Guidelines
1. Participants
This year's competition invites current PhD, master's, and undergraduate students from universities worldwide that offer programs in Transportation Engineering and related disciplines. These disciplines include, but are not limited to, Transportation Engineering, Road and Railway Engineering, Transportation Equipment and Control Engineering, Traffic Safety, Logistics Engineering, Civil Engineering, Vehicle Engineering, Automation, Computer Science, Artificial Intelligence, Measurement and Control Technology and Instruments, and Materials Science.
The competition organizing committee explicitly encourages and will provide clear support in awards evaluation for:
(1) Teams with interdisciplinary backgrounds,
(2) Joint teams from domestic and international universities,
(3) Cutting-edge research directions such as artificial intelligence, digital twins, and advanced manufacturing.
2. Scope of Entries
Entries must be the research content and achievements of the participating team within two years (2024-2025) completed before the submission deadline. Participating in teams are required to submit entry project proposal. The achievements involved can include papers, patents, software, physical objects, drawings, models, research reports, etc.
All content should be original or have independent intellectual property rights, meet the requirements of the theme of the competition, and must not be plagiarized. If there are teams that violate the above regulations, their qualifications will be disqualified.
The participating teams should own the copyright to the commercial software they use and the competition organizing committee will protect the copyright of the entries.
3. Entry method
Preliminary Round: Participants must register and submit a preliminary proposal through the official channels before the deadline. The Organizing Committee will evaluate the submissions and announce the list of teams advancing to the final round.
Final Round: At least one representative from each participating team is required to attend the final round hosted in Singapore. The final round will include activities such as oral presentations, video shows, and Q&A.
4. Registration requirements
Project submissions must be made by teams, with each team consisting of no more than 6 members and up to 2 advisors. Each participant may apply to a maximum of 2 tracks in the competition.
5. Language requirements
The competition project submission and defense language are English.
